Molecular Gas Conditions in Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Speaker: Fumi Egusa (IoA, U Tokyo)

Abstract:

Spiral galaxies are important in many aspects – Our Galaxy is also a spiral galaxy, spiral galaxies are the majority in the local Universe, and most of the star formation occurs in spiral galaxies. In this talk, I will review recent progress in understanding spiral galaxies, especially conditions of their molecular gas based on ALMA observations. There are many projects with different perspectives: PHANGS increased the number of galaxies spatially resolved in CO line, while ALCHEMI increased the number of emission lines with the wide frequency coverage. Our M83 project provides CO maps of this galaxy with the widest FoV and highest resolution and sensitivity. I will present some of the recent results from this data set, including the detection of high velocity clouds and the variation of the CO line ratio. Finally, I will address the questions unanswered yet and future prospects.
