I'm Akimasa Kataoka, an assitant professor at National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. I study planet formation from both theoretical and observational perspectives. I completed my undergraduate and master's studies at Kyoto University before pursuing my PhD at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies. I obtained my PhD in 2014 while conducting research at the Division of Theoretical Astronomy of NAOJ. Following my doctoral studies, I held post-doctoral positions, including one at Heidelberg University in Germany. Since 2017, I have been working at the current position.

Since the webpage is most viewed by Japanse researchers and undergrads, I keep update the Japanese version of the webpage. The English version has minimal information.

Postdoc positions at NAOJ.

There are some fellowship programs that you can apply to. You can find the summary here. I pick up some of them as follows.

NAOJ fellowship (5 years, an independent position)

The application deadline is normally in August every year. The contract term is 5 years and you have full of freedom of research. Currently this position is one of the best positions in Japan (or in the world). NAOJ fellowship

NAOJ Project Research Fellow (General) (3 years)

I can be a host of this project research fellow. Contact me before applying. This position opens every year. The deadline is normally in October.

EACOA fellowship (3 years)

You have to choose two institutes to stay from some East Asian astronomcal institutes including NAOJ.

JSPS fellowship (2 years)

An independent fellowship that you can take any institutes in Japan. I can be a host of the program.

Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan (Standard Program)

Humboldt alumni

If you are eduacated in Germany, you may be eligible to apply to Humboldt foundation to get 2 year self-funding. I can be a host of this program.

Ph.D. positions at NAOJ.

We accept students from The Graduate University for Advanced Studies (=SOKENDAI). You are enrolled to the graduate school, but you spend your time at NAOJ Mitaka campus. In Japan, supervisors do not directly hire students. All students must be self-funded, while there are some financial support programs of SOKENDAI. The application deadline is normally in June to July to start in Autum next year. You need to prepare from more than one year ago.
